WordPress 2.6.2 is out

WordPress 2.6.2

There is a new .1 release out for WordPress. Unlike 2.6.1 everyone should upgrade to 2.6.2 because this is a security release. This is especially important for folks who use open registration. Here are the details from the WordPress blog:

If you allow open registration on your blog, you should definitely upgrade. With open registration enabled, it is possible in WordPress versions 2.6.1 and earlier to craft a username such that it will allow resetting another user’s password to a randomly generated password. The randomly generated password is not disclosed to the attacker, so this problem by itself is annoying but not a security exploit. However, this attack coupled with a weakness in the random number seeding in mt_rand() could be used to predict the randomly generated password.

You can download WordPress 2.6.2 here.

WordPress seems to be coming out with a lot of new updates.  In the case of a security release this is a good thing but can get frustrating if you have a lot of blogs.  I use a pluging called Instant Upgrade and I highly recommend it.  It makes upgrading WordPress very painless.  So if you have a lot of blogs orhate upgrading manually you should definitely download this plug-in.

New WordPress Theme Repository

Posted by Andy Crofford

Shawn from Elite Blogger is in the process of setting up what he hopes to be the largest WordPress theme site on the internet.  The URL for his WordPress Theme site is Word.PressThe.me. Pretty sweet domain name if you ask me.  Shawn also has a pretty cool design on the site.

I encourage everyone to help Shawn out and add a theme if you have one. This is a good opportunity to be part of something great. Shawn is a very nice guy and runs a great blog. I think it would be awesome if he achieved his goal.

Promoting your blog with blog directories

Promote it with blog directories.

Promote it with blog directories.

Anyone that has been on the Internet, even briefly, can see that blogs are very popular. There are many different kinds of blogs. There are blogs where the author rants about any subject they choose, blogs for the fun of blogging, and blogs created to make money. It is possible, and difficult, to generate income with a blog. The most difficult part is generating enough readers to make it worth someone’s time to advertise on your blog. This is a pretty simple forumla, the more readers you have the more money you can make. The big question is: how can you get this traffic?

One of the best ways of doing this is by submitting your blog to blog directories. Blog directories typically have blogs sorted by category and are very diverse. Regardless of your niche it is safe to say you can probably find a category on a blog directory that is relevant to your blog.

In conclusion, promoting your blog on blog directories is a great way to get traffic as well as build those precious backlinks.

WordPress 2.6.1 Released

Posted by Andy Crofford

In typical WordPress fashion a .1 software build has been released shortly after a .0.

There are approximately 60 issues fixed with this release. You can view them here.  This is not a security release so upgrading is optional.

I have not yet upgraded but plan to do so this weekend.  If anyone has any issues please leave a comment here.  I never had any problems with 2.6 as others have reported.  The issues I did have were normally related to a plug-in which was easily fixed.

Twitter

Posted by Andy Crofford

In addition to StumbleUpon I have recently started using Twitter more.  Several weeks ago I set it up to post my blog postings but I want to start adding more than just that.

Thanks to the fact that I finally got around to checking out the Thirty Day Challenge Pre-season I learned about a couple of pretty cool tools:

Twhirl: - This is a desktop client for Twitter based on Adobe Air.  Pretty much anything you can do on Twitter you can do directly from the Twhirl app.

Twitter Bar - This one is really awesome.  It allows you to post to Twitter from your address bar.  Just enter what you want to say in addition to the URL and click the little icon to the left of the star and it will post it without having to visit the Twitter site.  In addition to that it will also shorten the URL in the Twitter message using the Tiny URL service.

I am looking forward to playing around with these tools and see what all I can do with them.  I have never been big on things like Facebook, Stumbleupon, and Twitter but I am coming around slowly but surely.

Follow me on Twitter and I will do the same for you.
